Who is Synhelion and what is their mission?

Synhelion is a Swiss technology pioneer, a spin-off from ETH Zurich, dedicated to decarbonizing transportation through solar fuels. Their mission is to replace fossil fuels with carbon-neutral alternatives produced from concentrated solar energy, specifically targeting aviation, shipping, and heavy industry.

How does Synhelion’s "Sun-to-Liquid" technology work?

The process uses a field of mirrors (heliostats) to focus solar radiation onto a solar receiver at the top of a tower. TES is a mechanical necessity that allows Synhelion’s plants to operate 24/7. By storing excess solar heat in specialized thermal storage tanks, the chemical fuel production process can continue long after sunset, ensuring a consistent and synergistic industrial output.

Why are Synhelion’s fuels referred to as "Drop-in" fuels?

They are called "drop-in" fuels because they are chemically identical to conventional fossil fuels. They can be used directly in existing engines (planes, ships, trucks) and existing logistics infrastructure without any modifications. This makes them a seamless integrator for the global transition to net-zero emissions.

How does Synhelion contribute to a closed-loop carbon cycle?

Synhelion uses CO2 as a raw material, capturing it from the atmosphere or industrial point sources. When the solar fuel is eventually burned, it releases only the amount of CO2 that was previously captured for its production. This creates a sustainable, balanced carbon cycle that does not add new CO2 to the biosphere.

Where is the company’s first industrial-scale plant located?

Synhelion’s first industrial-scale plant, named "DAWN," is located in Jülich, Germany. It is the world’s first facility to demonstrate the entire solar fuel production chain at an industrial level, positioning Germany as a leading hub for future energy architecture.
