What is Solar Diesel (Sun-to-Liquid)?

Solar diesel is a carbon-neutral synthetic fuel produced by using concentrated solar thermal energy to drive high-temperature chemical reactions. Unlike traditional e-fuels that rely primarily on electricity (Power-to-Liquid), solar diesel utilizes the sun's heat directly to split water and CO2 into synthesis gas, which is then processed into high-quality liquid fuel.

How does the solar tower technology work?

The process typically involves a field of mirrors (heliostats) that focus sunlight onto a receiver atop a central tower. Temperatures in the receiver can exceed 1,500°C, triggering a thermochemical cycle. This architecture allows for higher energy efficiency compared to indirect electrical methods, capturing more of the sun's potential in the final fuel product.

Why is Solar Diesel a "drop-in" fuel?

Solar diesel is chemically identical to the fossil-based diesel used today. This means it is a "drop-in" solution that can be used in existing internal combustion engines and distributed through current pipelines and gas stations without any modifications to the infrastructure.

Yes. One of the greatest advantages of liquid solar fuels is their energy density and stability. Unlike electricity, which requires expensive battery systems for long-term storage, solar diesel can be stored in standard tanks indefinitely, providing a strategic energy reserve.

To ensure 24/7 production, solar diesel plants use thermal storage (often using molten salt or ceramics). This allows the chemical reactor to continue running throughout the night using stored solar heat, maximizing the utilization of the industrial plant.
