What is Synthetic Fuel (e-Fuel)?

Synthetic fuels are liquid fuels produced through a chemical process that utilizes hydrogen (extracted via water electrolysis) and carbon dioxide (captured from the atmosphere or industrial sources). They are designed to replace fossil fuels without requiring changes to the design of existing internal combustion engines.

How does the Power-to-Liquid (PtL) process work?

The process begins by using renewable energy (solar or wind) to split water into hydrogen and oxygen. The hydrogen is then combined with captured CO2 through Fischer-Tropsch synthesis or methanol synthesis to create a hydrocarbon chain identical to gasoline, diesel, or kerosene.

Why are synthetic fuels considered "Carbon-Neutral"?

They are carbon-neutral because their combustion releases exactly the same amount of CO2 into the atmosphere that was previously captured and used for their production. This creates a closed-loop carbon cycle that does not add new CO2 to the biosphere.

Can synthetic fuels save conventional engines?

Yes, this is their primary strategic advantage. e-Fuels are fully compatible with current infrastructure—gas stations, pipelines, and automotive engines. They allow for the decarbonization of transport without the immediate need to scrap millions of vehicles, serving as a prime example of resource efficiency.

What is the difference between Biofuels and Synthetic Fuels?

Biofuels are produced from biomass (plants, waste), which can compete with food production for land. Synthetic fuels (e-Fuels) are a purely industrial product based on electrochemistry. They offer a higher degree of purity, predictability, and do not put pressure on agricultural resources.

While light passenger cars are moving toward electrification, e-Fuels are a "mechanical necessity" for sectors that are difficult to electrify:

  • Heavy Industry: Construction machinery and long-distance trucking.
